The Unlikely Candidate
The Unlikely Candidate My childhood best friend changed schools in 8th grade, so I didnât get to see her much afterwards, except for the occasional get togethers after we took our exams at the bimonthly Science League competitions. (Nerd status, I know, but confession: I was much more motivated by the socialization aspect of Science League than the exams.) September of senior year in high school, she invited me to go to a MIT info session with her. At that time, I wasnât really considering MIT, because as my earlier confession would confirm escaping math and science was one of the things I looked forward to about finishing high school. But with classic Asian parents watching over my shoulders during application season, the MIT information session was a stellar opportunity to spend time with my friend in an educational environment. But seeing as Im going through senior year at MIT right now, I clearly got more out of that info session than the usual chitchat and pamphlets. My dad dropped me off at the venue, and right away, I spot my friend and her classmates from her new school. They were chatting effervescently about cookies or something. I caught onto the âcookiesâ part, because why wouldnt they serve cookies as refreshments before the info session? So I asked enthusiastically, âCookies? Cookies? Where?! Where??â They glanced over at me, but nobody said anything. Later I realized they were talking about browser cookies. At that moment, I thought, Wow, this is a sign I dont belong here But the info session turned out to be really convincing and I decided to apply to MIT. If youve been following my entries, youll know that my path here has been kind of unorthodox. Back during the application season, I was pretty optimistic, and thought that if I am just honest in my application, wherever I end up will be good for me, and I will be valuable to it. That place turned out to be MIT. I certainly have never regretted applying to MIT or choosing MIT. But I do wonder every so often just how much I belong here was I what the admission officers call a right fit? It didnt appear so at first. In senior year of high school, I was not understanding AP Calc BC at all, so much so I was scared to send out mid-year reports. And when I got to MIT, I would proceed to get Câs on pretty much all of the GIRs calculus, biology, chemistry, physics It was quite a disheartening start. These days, my GPA is surprisingly above water. What Ive learned is that though on the surface Iâm not the typical MIT candidate, something about my intellectual spirit clicks with MIT. I always pass through this one hallway and see a panel that quotes our former president Susan Hockfield, âMIT is where science and society meet.â Right then, my body is so invigorated, my mind so inspired, and I know that here, I have something to gain and something to give. *** Represent yourself honestly in the applications. If you come to MIT, you might fit in in unexpected ways, and if you end up at another school, who knows what values you will hold?

Washington Irving, American Story Teller Essay - 1176 Words
Washington Irving, American Story Teller I strongly agree the statement ââ¬Å"Washington Irving found in legend and folklore a view of the natural world colored by emotion, by superstition, and by the ancient belief that supernatural beings inhabit the wild places of the earth. He wrote stories that illustrated old truths about human nature and the dramatic possibilities of the American landscape.â⬠Although Irving wrote over twenty volumes, including essays, poems, histories, biographies, and more, in class, we have focused on his fiction. Irving dispersed many beliefs and legends of his time, and the past, into his stories. He also made great use of American themes in these literary pursuits. Such details along with existent people and events interlaced in his fanciful tales are some of the reasons I find his work so distinctive and enjoyable. Washington Irving was the youngest of eleven children, born into a somewhat wealthy New York City merchant family in 1783. He wrote fo r newspapers, journals, and magazines in his twenties. Shortly afterward, he worked in publishing and editing. As a true belletrist, Erving found great enjoyment in writing. Gatsby Differences Between Movie And Book - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 933 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2019/03/26 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: The Great Gatsby Essay Did you like this example? The Great Gatsby is a book known by millions of people in the world- and for great reason. The book depicts two star-crossed lovers whose relationship is constantly thrown off course by other forces. In the book, a somewhat relationship happens between Jay Gatsby, the protagonist, and Daisy, the golden girl. Forty-nine years after the book was published, a movie came out, followed by another that came out in 2013, this time, more fit to the modern audience. Both the movies help the reader to better understand and picture the book, despite their differences. In chapter 1 of the Great Gatsby, one of the major differences in the (2013) movie from the book is how the movie started. In the movie, the opening scene shows Nick Carraway and a psychiatrist in an office where Nick talks and writes about his past experiences with Gatsby, whereas the book first starts off with Nick talking about the advice that was given to him by his father. The quote, Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone just remember that all the people in this world havent had the advantages that youve had, (Fitzgerald, 1) is what Fitzgerald uses to start the novel. The director of the (2013) movie most likely added the scene to give the viewers an insight into what was happening between Nick and Gatsby. The beginning could have also been used as a hook because the author, in all likelihood, used it to set the tone for the whole film, giving the film a bit of an eerie feeling. The hook made me want to watch more, unlike the book, which made me want to shut it and give up o n reading it all together. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Gatsby: Differences Between Movie And Book" essay for you Create order Additionally, chapter 1 also differs in both versions in that when Nick goes to have dinner at Daisys house, the dinner takes place outside in the backyard in the book, whereas in the movie, it occurs inside the house. When Tom received a phone call in the movie (2013), he just moved to the room next to the dining room to answer the phone call, and in the book, he had to walk inside the house to answer the call. Maybe the director for the movie (2013) decided to make this scene a bit different from the book to be able to see what was going on in both rooms in one set because in the movie (1974) they didnt really show the part when Tom went to go answer his phone call. In addition, chapter 1 also has some similarities. In both the book and the movie, Nick goes over to Tom and Daisys house to have dinner. In both versions, Tom receives a phone call ( Fitzgerald, 5-21). Presumably, the director wanted to have the same scene in order for the viewers to understand the point of it. In the book and the movie (1974) , when Tom leaves the dinner table, the author and director both make it seem suspicious by Tom going by himself to go answer the phone call. To add to the list of similarities, in the book and both movies (1974 and 2013), they all mention the book The Rise of the Colored Empires. This may be because when the book was made, the stock market crash had just happened three to four weeks before the book was made. In chapter 7, another similarity can be found between the book and both the movies, they both have Myrtle, Toms lover and Wilsons wife (Fitzgerald, 137) die in a car accident. Myrtle died due to Daisy not slowing down the car she was driving, due to her being tense from a prior scene. As a result of her killing Myrtle, Daisy decides to speed off, not acknowledging what she had just done. In both versions of The Great Gatsby, Wilson reacts in the same way, however, when Tom was introduced into the scene, a noticeable difference was present. Tom tries to console Wilson and get out of the blame, that he knows would happen because he rode a yellow car hours before the accident happened. With Toms fear to not get in jail and because he is rich, he will try to put the blame on Gatsby, since Tom wants to get back at him and to leave Daisy alone. Despite this, a friend of Wilson tries to convince to not do anything rash, without any actual proof or evidence, but Wilson doesnt listen as he ha d his mind corrupted while he was vulnerable. In the book, Tom says he is a friend of Wilson and that he knows the yellow car (Fitzgerald, 140), when the police officer questions him about what was going on with him and Wilson. In the movie, though, the police officers hear that Tom had a yellow car clearly making it noticeable that other people around him are doubting him and thinking that hes a liar, especially when he said that he had a blue car. The motive of the director to do this most probably is to make it more noticeable how Wilson has come to be aware of things around him that he didnt before but doesnt notice those. Though one thing that both the book and movie was noticeable the same was that Wilson didnt dare question, or doubt, Tom not even a little bit, about why Myrtle would act the way she did when Tom would come. If Wilson had just been suspicious of Tom and listen to his friend, then he wouldnt have done what he did, especially to the wrong person. The kind of influence and manipulation that Tom had on Wilson, greatly affected the actions that Wilson did afterward.

Pricing as a marketing mix involves the offering of discounts, credit terms, and providing of allowances to the target consumers. Current consumers are very sensitive to prices at which goods are offered, and therefore, it is necessary that a business firm should implement effective pricing strategies. Samsung has successfully used the pricing strategy as a marketing mix in its marketing process (Littleson, 2007). Samsung has successfully utilized the skimming pricing strategy to remain ahead of its competitors and to improve its sales volume and profit margin. Here, Samsung introduces high-value products such as Samsung Edge smartphone and sells them at high prices before they become obsolete. In addition to this Samsung also utilizes the competitive pricing strategy. Here it offers products for all categories of consumers, for example, are expensive products for the high class and cheaper products for the middle and lower class ((Bhasin, 2016)). Samsung Electronics makes use of selective distribution intensity strategy to distr ibute its products to target consumers. The consumers can acquire this product from several but selected outlets such as Walmart stores, The Kroger Co., Costco, and The Home Depot (Burrows, 2008). Samsung advertises its products over television and internet platforms developed and developing countries, and this has enabled it to expand its market share by reaching new consumers. For example, in the year 2014, Samsung expanded its market share by 5% in the Asian region through advertising and product promotion (Obhrai, 2015). Conclusion In summary, the marketing consists of four elements, product, price, place, and promotion. Marketing mix facilitates the planning and execution of a marketing plan, and hence, it influences an increase in demand for the involved product. A business that offers high-quality products succeeds in its marketing process. Effective pricing strategy also helps a business to make more sales. These have to be incorporated by the use of effective product promotion methods and appropriate channels to reach the target market. The incorporation of the marketing mix contributes to a successful business as demonstrated by Samsung Electronics. References List Bhasin, H. (2016). Marketing mix of Samsung 4P of Samsung.
